EUCO2 Project
The EU has set its goals for the future. It has been done and calculated and the results are in and released in the public domain. As it turns out the union want to reduce emissions by 50% by 2050. According to experts that means a reduction of 80% for industrial countries. Latest data shows that 75% of all pollution in the EU comes from the metropolitan areas.
This is the reason METREX decided to post a project with InterregIVc. After two rejections from the organization financing was finally approved by the European Commission in August 2009. In December 2009 General Electric joined the program as an official partner and sponsor.
The program itself is made up of three stages - making a local mapping of the CO2 emissions, workshop regarding possible strategies for CO2 reduction and third headrest step is to implement those.
The first step is complete, all of the 18 municipal areas have been successfully studied and the results have been released into the public.
It has been decided that a work meeting of the participants is to take place in February '10. More than this the second stage consists of many meetings on the local level. On these the administration meets the many interested - industry, transportation, services and others and all decide on a program to minimize CO2 emissions.
The heart of the program is the GRIP program. Developed by scientists from the University of Manchester, UK the program is a real time simulator. It uses the data gathered from stage one is fed to the program after which it is able to simulate the outcome of different actions regarding green house gas output.
Europe today is famous for its innovation in green technology and search for a more sustainable future. If successful this program will solidify the European leadership as the world's ecological leader.
